5.10 Abandon All Hope: See You on the Other Side
I’m very late posting anything at all about this episode. I have a couple unfinished rough drafts, but simply couldn’t formally get further than posting a desperation idea at icine. I was left unsettled then and had that feeling find its way back to the fore with the repeat last Thursday. It’s one of those episodes that I can’t casually rewatch and can’t seem to just shake off. Man, I’m ready for the story to move on.
I’m having a difficult time keeping up my “I believe… I believe… It’s silly, but I believe,” chant. And yet, here I am clinging to Jo telling Ellen that “This is why we’re here, right?” when deciding to sacrifice themselves to buy the boys whatever time they could. The echo of family sacrificing and refusing to abandon one another hits a little too close to home. If it isn’t illustrating what has happened already since Dean’s trip to hell, then it surely is foreshadowing something exactly that painful yet to come.
There are a couple other bits I (when I squint really hard!) keep thinking could turn into something down the line. Bobby clearly assumed Dean was in charge of what would happen next. My view in large part sees the boys as authors of the story and Dean needing to realize their power in that regard. How I would love for Dean’s “See you on the other side” to come true with the boys making a return to Earthly reality and meeting up again with a live Ellen and Jo – as opposed to upon entering an after-death plane.
On a more general note, thanks to the Thanksgiving sales I set myself up with a big screen television and blu-ray player. Naturally the first thing I upgraded was seasons three and four of the show. Hate the controls, but wow! what fun to watch the Winchesters in such quality. My daughter-in-law watched season three with me and my daughter got caught up on season four. I have to say that every couple of episodes I’d experience some big PING of recognition for how something I’d forgotten would fit into my theories. For instance, the flag motif I finally caught onto when they created an entire themed motel room in 5.06 I Believe the Children Are Our Future? That’s been present all along!
