tuning in to angel radio in 4.09
4.09 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” screencaps (by oxoniensis) are up and there’s too much to know where to begin. Crosses? Shoulders? That’s coming, but I’m not even through halfway and this is demanding I pay attention to it now.

This is the window Anna is hiding behind in the church attic when the Winchesters find her. Their first visual for her is that of an angel armed with a sword and carrying Christ the King’s banner. (I’m making that part up based on the purple and cross flowing atop the standard.) Anna’s able to hear angels and is relaying their messages. I took her first words of the ep as ones of cautious relief and hope – “Sam? Not Sam Winchester?” I’m especially pleased by the recognition to be heard in“the Dean?” after she’s come out to face the boys. And, I think it’s perfect that the first angel broadcast Anna ever picked up were the words, “Dean Winchester is saved.” It doesn’t take too much imagination for me to hear that accompanied by a clarion trumpet and with the sunrise breaking over the horizon.
<– to the side and backlit as the boys decide to make a leap (of faith?) through the large purple cross window to save themselves. (Yes, that whole idea deserves its own post eventually.)
The lit angel window doesn’t even show in the snowy fullscreen broadcast channel I get! It’s cropped out of the frame which should illustrate how much I appreciate screencaps while I wait for the dvds. (I got a converter box, but so far can’t make the digital CW channel come in. What’s up with that?)
Next week should tell more, but right now I’m wondering if there are direct parallels between Dean and Anna and how far they might extend. Remember Castiel at one time expected Dean to be able to hear his true voice. Now we meet Anna who apparently can. Anna’s access to angelic information is a threat and wanted by the demons. I’ve considered before whether Dean doesn’t have some intel about Lilith/Lucifer/Azazel’s endgame that the angels would find useful in their struggle. He says he’s remembered all of his hell experience, but perhaps he doesn’t understand the significance of some pieces? Also, Sam was called useful by Uriel and we still don’t know how to take that particularly. Could one of the boys (or better yet, the team of them) be a receiver or transmitter of sorts?

Have you been noticing that there is suddenly purple in the color scheme? There was a purple bedspread in one of the motel rooms and I can’t remember if it was 407 or 408, and now we’re seeing the purple in the stained glass that the boys jump through.
If you take the two colors purple is made of and use the SPN color wheel you get the interesting combination of red–demonic and blue–purity.
Generaly when I see an angel with sword and banner I assume the Angel Michael. I wish we could see all the way the the feet as the icon is quite often completed by having him standing on top of a dragon (read:Satan) which would be close enough to proof for me to call the window Micheal.
This may have stirred my own thinkey thoughts. I’m off to percolate.
Kayljay – Thanks for commenting!
I immediately thought of that bedspread too when we got that wonderful purple window. That was the ep. Sam spent sprawling and researching on top of the purple field, right? And we were introduced to Uriel.
I’m not coming up with other good examples of purple in the show off the top of my head, though. I like you remembering the SPN meanings behind the components of purple.
Royalty was the first association I remember learning in school. And, I just did a quick googling for church symbolism of purple since I remember it being used on the altar.
First hit went to: http://www.epworthsteeple.org/symbols.htm
…the color purple is used during Advent and Lent. Purple represents penitence, fasting, and royalty.
Aaack! Lent is 40 days! Where did 40 (days?) and Supernatural intersect recently??? Ooo, I need to remember! Also, we’re not that far away from actual Advent season which starts on Nov. 30th this year.
Stef Thank you also for commenting. My knowledge of angel lore* is woefully lacking. I associate Michael with a sword and Gabriel with a trumpet. That’s all I’ve got! I’d love to hear about it if you follow up on this in any way. Drop off a link if you work something up please.
* I did just say “lore” like Sam does, though.
HI! Just a quick thought in reference to something mentioned in one of the comments above. It’s not 40 DAYS, per se, but in SPN it has been mentioned that Dean’s 4 months in Hell were more like 40 years Hell-time (which I immediately thought of when I saw the comment about Lent and then makes me think of Moses and the Israelites wandering the desert for 40 years…)
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Jazz. It took me longer than it should have to remember, but Lilith did bring up the “four months is like 40 years in hell” idea in 4.06 Yellow Fever. That must have been what was nagging at me.
