Fantasia Film Festival June 27, 2007

Posted by mrspeel in : Events, Movies , add a comment

My goal for this summer is to take advantage of Montreal’s beauty and it’s festivals. The Jazz festival is opening tomorrow, and on July 5th Fantasia opens. This will be my first experience with a film festival, and I hope to see at least a few films. So far I’m interested in seeing Arch Angels, The Banquet, War of Flowers and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C Solid State Society. I’ve only just browsed through their schedule though. I’m notorious for managing to avoid leaving the house, but I hope to break that habit this year and perhaps even meet a few people. It should be fun.

Band a part (Nouvelle Vague, 2004) June 22, 2007

My recent musical infatuation is with the French band, Nouvelle Vague, a French bossa nova group that covers various pop hits from the 1980s. They have a fresh and playful sound that is reminescent of the new wave French films they are homaging. Unlike many cover songs, they don’t try to replicate the sound or feel of the songs, but put an entirely different feel to everything. All their covers have a dinstinct and identifyable sound that while widely accessible is not quite mainstream. The only major critisism I can pin down to is their music lacks a level of complexity or a real edge. Some of their songs fade far too easily in the background, and don’t take the forefront as a focal point. However, songs like Dance with Me or Bela Lugosi is Dead, are not only incredibly catchy but seem to invade your whole being. When they’re at their best, their music is possesive and totally encompassing. There is something infectious about their music, and on a semi-popular youtube clip a user matched Dance with me with the cafe dance from Band a Part, and again you’re reminded of the youthful enthousiasm of Godard’s or Truffaut’s films that they’ve managed to channel through their music.

Although I’ve heard one or two of their songs from their first album (I love Too Drunk to Fuck), this is really my first venture into their music. As I mentioned, I don’t think they’re as of yet at the top of their game. Some of their songs and music is too passive, something like chic elevator music… still I can’t wait to see what they can come up with next, because their sound can be exciting. This is how cover music should be done.

8/10

* I got the photo of the band in performance from this amazing new blog I just discovered, you anglophones don’t be discouraged by the lack of English because there are some absolutely stunning photography. I’m posting the link here, but I’ll also add it to my blogroll.

79. The Wild Bunch (1969)

I’m very happy to see this included, one of the great westerns not even so much as great entertainment, but a great commentary on the genre as well as violence in society. Reminds me I need to see more Peckinpah.

78. Modern Times (1936)

I can’t complain over the inclusion of any Chaplin, and this is one of his best. Modern Times is ambitious, and a wonderful rebellion against the depersonalization of industrializaion. Paulette Goddard is also probably the most enigmatic and talented actress to play opposite the tramp. I love the iconic final shot.

77. All The President’s Men (1976)

I need to see this. Not one of my major priorities though.

76. Forrest Gump (1994)

This film is “too cute”. I don’t think it’s a bad film, but I don’t think it’s particularly great either. It tries too hard to pull all the right strings, and I don’t see what sets it apart enough to include on the list.

75. In The Heat Of The Night (1967)

A great and underappreciated film (or so I thought before the inclusion here), it’s a powerful film about race issues that are still relevant today. Opposed to the previous inclusion of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, this film is far more potent and not hocky. The script and the performances are top notched.

74. The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)

I DESPERATELY need to see this.

73. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (1969)

I’m surprised at the inclusion of this, but I won’t complain. It’s a fun flick.

72. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

I have still managed to avoid this one, I sorta want to see it though, so I will…someday.

71. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

I don’t really want to see this.

70. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Not only is this VERY British, I don’t like it at all really. I think it’s technically a great cinematic achievement, but I’m not caught up in it. I also don’t quite agree with it’s message all together at least.
69. Tootsie (1982)

Their infatuation with this flick shocks me, it’s funny ONCE, and doesn’t really have that much of an impact otherwise. Meh, what do I know though?

68. Unforgiven (1992)

Another good choice, my favourite Eastwood film it really deconstructs the western myth. I think though that Altman’s McCabe and Mrs. Miller does a better job, but I think it still deserves it’s spot.

67. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966)

The performances in this film are mind blowingly good, and it’s one of the best shot plays I’ve seen. I think additionally it’s important in it’s paving the way for more lenient acceptance of profanity.

66. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

I actually only saw this for the first time about a month or two ago, and I fell in love with it. A great parody/homage to old adventure flicks (notably Gunga Din).

65. The African Queen (1951)

Not a fan.

64. Network (1976)

Anothe film I don’t like much at all. I think I should give it another chance though, I saw it about four years ago when I just started to watch films seriously. I can’t deny it’s importance in terms of it’s relevance to television today, and the brilliance of those monologues.

63. Cabaret (1972)

A great musical, and deserving of it’s spot. Very dark, and a new way or presenting the musical.

62. American Graffiti (1973)

Will see very soon.

61. Sullivan’s Travels (1941)

A resounding yes, it’s the film that shows why comedies are so wonderful, not only because it’s wickedly funny but in the story. Veronica Lake sure is a looker.

10 Years later… AFI 100 Best American Films June 21, 2007

Posted by mrspeel in : Movies, News , 2comments

10 years ago I was 8 years old. My favourite movies were Beauty and the Beast and the Wizard of Oz. I didn’t have an interest in films, and I didn’t even have good enough cable to get the first run of the show. Jump forward seven years when my passion for film was really ignited, their first run list was something that I used as a guide for film watching. I didn’t know much about cinema, and I tried to see as many of the films as possible. While I STILL haven’t seen all the films listed on  the original, I think the list is fairly good. I have many problems with it, and think it’s too populist (still, what do you expect from a list done by consensus?), but it’s a good starting point for film, and I think it’s fairly solid.

Last night I watched the 10 years later show, and like every year since I started watching I enjoyed the hell out of it. Maybe I’m just easy to please, but the show is well made and downright fun. I like to be reminded of old favourites, as well as getting introduced to films I haven’t seen before. I don’t think the list is worth getting upset or used as justification for a film’s quality (or lack thereof). It’s a good way to remind  people why they like cinema, and gets the discussion rolling. For the sake of fun I’m going to go through all 100, and give brief thoughts on the inclusions.

100. Ben-Hur (1959)

I haven’t seen this, and I can’t say I really have an urge too. I once tried to sit through this multi hour epic and couldn’t get past the first hour. I did see the chariot race on TV once though, and it’s impressive. I don’t see myself hurryingto see the rest anytime soon though.

99. Toy Story (1995)

I don’t have a problem with this at all, especially considering it’s important impact on animation. It’s also just a great film. I would have liked to see other animated films in it’s place (Bambi, Sleeping Beauty, or even Finding Nemo), but I appreciate it’s impact and think it’s a good film.

98. Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)

I’m surprised this is still on the list honestly, while I think Cagney is an absolute JOY to watch, and the music is pretty good I think as a non-American I can’t fully appreciate the blatant patriotism displayed. It turns me off somewhat, and I doubt if this list were compilled by non-Americans it would make the list. I would like to have seen it replaced with something like 42nd Street or Gold Diggers of 1933 that are more important musicals in terms of reviving the genre, introducing a non-glamorous setting, and having Busby Berkeley working on the choreography.

97. Blade Runner (1982)

Should be higher, but I’m happy to see it on the list. I am also thrilled to see the new release for the DVD and apparently a limited theatrical release that I’ll be checking out.

96. Do The Right Thing (1989)

I haven’t seen this, but predicted it’s inclusion on a whim. I also am looking very much forward to seeing it.

95. The Last Picture Show (1971)

I was surprised to see it included, but very happy as well. A very sincere portrait of small town American life, as well as being a great drama about growing up. The performances and the cinematography are great.

94. Pulp Fiction (1994)

Not a fan, but I understand it’s impact. I think it’s where it should be on the list.

93. The French Connection (1971)

I haven’t seen this, and while I don’t particularly want to part of me loves Gene Hackman so I’ll check it out.

92. GoodFellas (1991)

I need to see this again, my love for it has been dying over the years but the clips included reminded me why it was one of my favourites a few years ago.

91. Sophie’s Choice (1982)

I’m shocked at the inclusion of this; I didn’t see it coming at all. I don’t think it’s a particularly remarkable film honestly, and don’t truly understand the mentality behind the inclusion. I can’t deny though the potency and the beauty of Merryl Streep’s performance.

90. Swing Time (1936)

I don’t know if I’ve seen this or not… I don’t think so… I’m not much of a fan of Fred Astaire, but I won’t really dispute the inclusion of this. As I said for Yankee Doodle Dandy though, I would have preferred a Busby Berkeley film.

89. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Good film, but not a great one. It doesn’t really hold up to multiple viewings. I don’t really understand the mentality behind the inclusion.

88. Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Not my favourite screwball by any means, but it’s the definete screwball in it’s utter nonsense.

87. 12 Angry Men (1957)

Again, not one of my favourites but it’s a beautifully crafted film and has very interesting commentary on the justice system. I love how it acknowledges it’s imperfections, while still holding the ability for people to cast aside their own prejudices when needed to make the world a better place.

86. Platoon (1986)

I haven’t seen and never really had an urge to. Maybe one day…

85. A Night At The Opera (1935)

I was upset when I first saw this because I thought it means Duck Soup was off the list. It’s definetely one of their best films, especially the deliciously surreal scene of them being in that crowded “room”.

84. Easy Rider (1969)

Surprised by the inclusion. I think this has a lot to do with the general age range of the voters rather than the quality of the film… although I haven’t seen it, so I shouldn’t really judge.

83. Titanic (1997)

I knew it was going to make it, it made a lot of money… and stuff. I don’t think it’s as bad as some say, but calling it the “Casabanca for this generation” is extreme. Meh I say.

82. Sunrise (1927)

I’m so ashamed I haven’t seen this, I’m happy it’s here though. Not enough older/silent films on the original list.

81. Spartacus (1960)

Not a fan really, it has it’s iconic moments, but they work best as Pepsi commercials. I’m not a fan of epics.

80. The Apartment (1960)

I love this film, and I’m only reminded that I need to see it again. Wilder balances comedy and drama so beautifully, and this film is the definition of bittersweet. I especially adore Shirley Maclaine who really ushers in a new brand of woman who’s smart, beautiful, and still vulnerable.

To Be Continued…

The Unknown (Browning, 1927) June 20, 2007

Posted by mrspeel in : Movies , add a comment

This is my second Browning film to date, and already I’m getting a feel for his films. At least in his films set in a circus setting, like The Unknown or the better known Freaks his films are misinterpreted as horrors. While they have some of the elements, at the core most of them are love stories above else. The love isn’t even necessarily twisted or grotesque, rather obsessive or more simply misunderstood and difficult. The characters in his films are
outcasts in the strictest sense of the word. Without undermining or truly exploiting his characters, Browning paints a portrait of a cruel world, as well as universally expressing the fears and obssesions of the everyday man.Without spoiling too much, the film stars Lon Chaney as an armless knife thrower who is obssesively and madly in love with Estrellita (Joan Crawford). He would do anything to win her love, and her pathological fear of men’s arms (the film subtly suggests her father molests her) seemed to put him at a romantic advantage. He has a secret though that could ruin his chances forever; he isn’t really armless. The film feels very much a precursor to Freaks for this reason. We have this man who in effect has chosen a lifestyle that serves to ostracize him from society. He has his reasons (I won’t delve into it so as to leave some surprise), but overall he adapts quite well to his lifestyle. Only Lon Chaney could have played this role, he truly is “The Man of a Thousand Faces”, and this film puts on display his transformative powers. Not only that, but he may be one of the most emotive silent film actor I’ve seen. There is nothing over the top about his performance, and it is so sincere the audience sympathisizes with him despite what we know about his character. He serves as a representation of the outcast, but as I mentioned earlier also the “every man”.

Alonzo is a fascinating character, and his love for Estrillita is incredibly sincere. His devotion to her runs so deep, that it reminds me of Heathcliff’s love for Cathy in Wuthering Heights, but only one way. As with the novel, one wonders if it even can be called love anymore, because of how much hate it breeds. Alonzo’s “love” can be seen in the same way, because he hurts more people (including Estrillita and himself) through his “love”, his obssesive brand of adoration brings no good to the world. Furthermore, his love can be better described as lust. He doesn’t mention wanting to be with her always, or live with her or take care of her, his emotions and focus is put on their wedding night. Partially because it’s a concern to him, but even before this particular thought occurs to him it’s his primary goal. This though is matched with the more than just lustful jealousy, but a drive to commit actions that are far beyond simple physical attraction.

Browning had worked in a circus for part of his life, and it no doubt had a great impact on his films. They are though, somewhat products of their time for this reason. While the circus still exists today, it’s under a very different incarnation that what is presented here. As a backdrop for psychological or thrilling dramas it can’t exist in a modern world, except as fantasy or as a period piece. The closest thing in recent years to bring back this orgy of misfits, criminals and poverty is HBO’s Carnivale a show I’ve unfortunately yet to see, although I hear good things.

The Unknown is one of the great, and darkest silents. Only running at about 50 minutes (at least another ten are unfortunately lost forever), it doesn’t have superfluous moment and literally flies by. Not one to miss, it’s available on DVD as part of TCM’s Lon Chaney Collection that also includes The Ace of Hearts and Laugh Clown Laugh. You can also check the TCM schedule for showtimes.
