I’ve been thinking about making changes to this blog. The original theme I had of things in the night time, I find to be rather narrow, and I want to include other things in the blog that doesn’t have something to do with the night.

All the articles I’ve posted so far will remain intact, but I may change the layout and the name of the blog. So Good Night View will be called something else. Hopefully these changes will happen within the week.

The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes is the second feature film by the Quay Brothers, who are well acclaimed animators. Although the film uses some animation sequences, it is predominantly live action.

The film is dazzling to look at. The images appear to look like you’re viewing them through a dust covered window. Beautifully hazy. But as much as I was taken by the images, I was fighting through the entire story of the film.

The film is about a beautiful opera singer, Malvina who is mysteriously murdered then revived by Dr. Droz, who lives on a reclusive island. The Dr. summons a piano tuner to work on his automatas, which are machines which produce sounds, like that of a moist finger encircling the rim of a glass (and I think they may also reflect dreams or desires.)

The automata is used as some sort of instrument to help Malvina get back to the stage, and to help the Dr. produce his operatic masterpiece. And then the Dr. starts talking about this ant from Cameroon and how it is attracted to a fungus that eats its brain and things become more and more confusing and abstract, that I just didn’t care.

I think the film is about being a prisoner of your own desire and how it eats at you like that fungus that eats at the ant’s brain. That’s what I can make of it. But the film gets into all sorts of symbolic meaning and esoteric ideas, it’s becomes a chore to watch. It’s really the visuals of the film that keep it from being entirely unbearable to watch. And as much as I may like to look for hidden meanings in a film, but when it becomes no fun to do, you can’t really enjoy watching a film such as this. And I didn’t enjoy the story. And only was able to watch it until the end due to its exquisite images. But that’s not enough for a film to succeed with me.

German born artist Max Ernst (1891-1976), was one of the influential members of the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. A self-taught artist, and former psychology student who’s reading of Freud played an integral role in his art, which are like windows into a dream world, full of both wonder and terror.

One of his greatest work is a collage-novel entitled UNE SEMAINE DE BONTÉ (A Week of Kindness). The book was made by cutting up and assembling images found in old Victorian encyclopedias and books, and transforming them into new imagery, illustrating one’s “most secret desires.”
