Max Ernst UNE SEMAINE DE BONTÉ

German born artist Max Ernst (1891-1976), was one of the influential members of the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. A self-taught artist, and former psychology student who’s reading of Freud played an integral role in his art, which are like windows into a dream world, full of both wonder and terror.

One of his greatest work is a collage-novel entitled UNE SEMAINE DE BONTÉ (A Week of Kindness). The book was made by cutting up and assembling images found in old Victorian encyclopedias and books, and transforming them into new imagery, illustrating one’s “most secret desires.”

Here are a few images from it.

Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau (1844-1910), was a French painter who was unique at the time, in that he was self-taught, and developed an individual style that differed from his contemporaries, the painters of the Academic Salon and the Impressionists.

The Sleeping Gypsy

Often classified as a Post-Impressionist, he is also regarded to be a precursor to Surrealism, as his paintings seem to inhabit a dreamlike landscape, often using wild jungles and fabulous animals as his favourite subjects to paint.
